These two volumes provide a completely new translation of the philosophical works of Descartes, based on the best available Latin and French texts. They are intended to replace the only reasonably comprehensive selection of his works in English, by Haldane and Ross, first published in 1911. All the works included in that edition are translated here, together with a number of additional texts crucial for an understanding of Cartesian philosophy, including important material from Descartes? scientific writings. Theory of Literature was originally published in 1949. It is not a textbook introducing the young to the elements of literary appreciation nor a survey of the techniques employed in scholarly research. The authors have sought to unite "poetics" (or literary theory) and "criticism" (evaluation of literature) with "scholarship" ("research") and "literary history" (the "dynamics"of literature, in contrast to the "statics" of theory and criticism).

In his paper “Double Vision, Phosphenes and Afterimages: Non-Endorsed Representations rather than Non-Representational Qualia,” Işık Sarıhan addresses the debate between strong representationalists and qualia theorists. He argues that qualia theorists like Ned Block and Amy Kind who cite double-vision, afterimages, etc., as evidence for the existence of qualia are mistaken about the actual nature of these states. According to Sarıhan, these authors confuse the fact that these states are non-endorsed representational states with the fact that they are at least partly (...) non-representational. I argue that Sarıhan’s argument contains gaps that suggest that he misidentifi es the mistake that leads these qualia theorists to their conclusion. In my view, these qualia theorists do not confuse the fact that the states in question are non-endorsed states with the fact that they are non-representational, but rather mistake certain representational contents, or certain aspects of these contents, for qualia. A recent French reform has revised the legal definition of the corporation. In essence, the law stipulates that the corporation must be run with due regard to the social and environmental impacts of its activity. It also introduces the notion of raison d’être and affords the possibility for any corporation to assign social or environmental purposes to itself, defined in its by-laws. This reform is similar to recent reforms in the UK and the US, but is based on an original (...) and distinctive theoretical argument. The aim of our article is to analyze the fundamental tenets of this reform and their implications for the theory of the corporation. It shows that the new law is based on a new positive definition of the enterprise as not only an economic organization or a productive entity, but more fundamentally a space for innovative collective action. We argue that this view of the enterprise challenges our conceptualization of the corporation in two important ways. First, it shows that the traditional theories overlook the activities of the enterprise and their related impacts, and that the corporation is not necessarily the appropriate legal vehicle for the innovative enterprise. Second, it suggests that the stipulation of the enterprise’s purpose or raison d’être in the corporate by-laws can provide new promising legal foundations for corporate responsibility. (shrink)

The founders of Krisis saw their journal as part of Rudi Dutschke’s ‘long march through the institutions’: a philosophical journal that would criticize and change the practices and institutions of academic philosophy from within. Philosophy should play a critical and emancipatory role in society and in intellectual and public debates, and the journal could help to enhance that role. Academic philosophy did change, but in a rather different direction: new public management took over and submitted academic research and education to (...) a new regime of entrepeneurial efficiency and disciplinary competition. To survive, Krisis metamorphosized several times and is now a broad bilingual online journal for intellectual debate and research with a loose relationship with academic philosophy. If it strengthens this identity, it can continue to play an intermediary role between academic research and public debate, in both directions. (shrink)

The philosophical journal Krisis has been around for 40 years this year. The editorial board wanted to celebrate this by asking four editors from the past and the current editor-in-chief to shed light on the past, present and future of Krisis. In this introduction, some of the developments of the journal are briefly mentioned. Despite all kinds of changes that have taken place since Krisis was founded in 1980, the journal has remained true to itself.

The revision of the Constitution in 1970 changed the so far unitary Belgium into a state made of four regions and three communities : the French, the Flemish and the German one.Specific organs guarantee their working: the «cultural councils». The French and the Flemish councils legislate by «decree».The Chambers vote the credit total allowed to each council, which, in its turn, by decree, appropriates that sum.The minister is responsable for the sanction, the promulgation and the execution of the decree. Y (...) et, he has not to account for it before the council.Does it mean that there exists no political responsability before the cultural councils? We do consider that this responsability is equivalent to the responsability that prevails before the Chambers and that the Constitution recognizes expressively and implicity the right to incriminate the minister, even to compel him to resign, if he has lost the cultural council's confidence. J'ai pris comme sujet de cet exposé la métaphysique orientale; peut-être aurait-il mieux valu dire simplement la métaphysique sans épithète, car, en vérité, la métaphysique pure étant par essence en dehors et au-delà de toutes les formes et de toutes les contingences, n'est ni orientale ni occidentale, elle est universelle. Ce sont seulement les formes extérieures dont elle est revêtue pour les nécessités d'une exposition, pour en exprimer ce qui est exprimable, ce sont ces formes qui peuvent être soit orientales, (...) soit occidentales; mais, sous leur diversité, c'est un fond identique qui se retrouve partout et toujours, partout du moins où il y a de la métaphysique vraie, et cela pour la simple raison que la vérité est une. S'il en est ainsi, pourquoi parler plus spécialement de métaphysique orientale? C'est que, dans les conditions intellectuelles où se trouve actuellement le monde occidental, la métaphysique y est chose oubliée, ignorée en général, perdue à peu près entièrement, tandis que, en Orient, elle est toujours l'objet d'une connaissance effective. Si l'on veut savoir ce qu'est la métaphysique, c'est donc à l'Orient qu'il faut s'adresser; et, même si l'on veut retrouver quelque chose des anciennes traditions métaphysiques qui ont pu exister en Occident, dans un Occident qui, à bien des égards, était alors singulièrement plus proche de l'Orient qu'il ne l'est aujourd'hui, c'est surtout à l'aide des doctrines orientales et par comparaison avec celles-ci que l'on pourra y parvenir, parce que ces doctrines sont les seules qui, dans ce domaine métaphysique, puissent encore être étudiées directement. Seulement, pour cela, il est bien évident qu'il faut les étudier comme le font les Orientaux eux-mêmes, et non point en se livrant à des interprétations plus ou moins hypothétiques et parfois tout à fait fantaisistes; on oublie trop souvent que les civilisations orientales existent toujours et qu'elles ont encore des représentants qualifiés, auprès desquels il.
